Over 40 people die on our roads every year because of defective or under inflated tyres. With these findings in mind, Ring Automotive set HJC Design a brief to design a range of stylish, user-friendly air compressors that were easily identifiable as a family of products.
Research & Innovation
HJC conducted a market opportunity analysis alongside a target user study in order to identify possible areas for innovation. Many road users were unaware of the importance of the correct tyre pressure. Customer feedback from existing products reported slow inflation times, illegible displays, tangled cables and cheap accessories which all contributed to a poor user experience.
Design for Tool Manufacture
The range had to be commercially successful by considering cost effective tooling layouts, and avoiding any intricate manufacturing techniques.
The design approach centred around creating a hassle-free, ergonomic experience for the everyday user. HJC developed a rear cable winding channel with dedicated accessory apertures and clips, ensuring motorists can easily store the compressor without loose cables, dangling wires or lost parts. A front-mounted high intensity LED inspection light provides the user with a bright working environment, and an SOS emergency flash setting helps to attract roadside assistance. The addition of a preset pressure mode with automatic cut off helps to avoid any confusion with mismatched PSI values.
