PICK & MIX TONGS
QoW are a supplier of pick & mix confectionery cabinets to major cinema chains all over the world. HJC were asked to design a suite of plastic injection moulded tongs to complement their pick & mix range.
HJC’s engineers identified a flaw in existing products, whereby complex injection mould tool designs resulted in a high piece part cost. Consequently a design for manufacture ethos was encouraged right from the concept stage to help reduce production costs and increase QoW’s margins.
A series of blue foam models and rapid prototypes were produced to fine tune the design and it’s ergonomic performance. These low fidelity prototypes were then engineered and optimised for injection moulding.
Injection Mould Tool Design
Simple sliding cores were utilised to enable the part to flex over the mould tool cavity when ejected. This allowed the introduction of several undercuts to improve scoop performance and increase the hinge durability.
In order to reach food hygiene standards, the final production parts were moulded in food grade polycarbonate and featured smooth transitional surfaces for easy cleaning.
